Behind the Booth: What We Learned at the Kings Drive Art Walk
What We Learned at the Kings Drive Art Walk
We just wrapped up our first-ever two-day art event at the Kings Drive Art Walk in Charlotte, and we wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes recap with you.
What We Hoped For
Going into it, we had high hopes. This was the biggest show we’ve ever signed up for—two full days in a heavily trafficked part of Charlotte. We were excited (and a little nervous) to put our work in front of more people than ever before. Our goals were simple: gain exposure, hear honest feedback, make great sales, and see if we could actually pull off a multi-day event.
First to Find a New Home – A Piece We Created Together
This round canvas was the very first piece we sold at the Kings Drive Art Walk, making it extra special to us. It’s one of the rare ones we created together—a blend of both our styles and hands in motion. With deep navy, soft white, and hints of metallic teal, it reminds us of a ripple or energy burst caught in motion. Seeing this one leave with its new owner felt like the perfect start to the weekend.
What We Brought
We brought several new pieces, set up our updated video showing how we make our art, and held a giveaway for a free 10x10 painting. We love giving people a little behind-the-scenes look at what goes into each piece, so having that video running on repeat felt like a nice way to invite people into our creative process.
How It Felt
Cory was a bundle of nerves and excitement—not knowing what to expect and worrying just a bit about leaving our artwork out overnight in the tent. Adrian was pumped about the size of the crowd but definitely kept a close eye on the weather forecast.
What It Was Like
The location was buzzing. Kings Drive is a popular walking area, and the event pulled in a constant flow of people. Our section of the show was absolutely packed—wall to wall with visitors. The other vendors were outgoing and super welcoming, regularly checking in to see how it was going for us.
While most visitors seemed to be there just to browse, there were some really meaningful moments. One that sticks with us was meeting a woman in a wheelchair who reminded Cory of his mom. She had decorated her wheelchair joystick with a beautiful rose and went out of her way to try and share where she found it. It was a small moment, but it stuck.
And of course, there were so many dogs—always a win in our book. Adrian even connected with a fellow UNCC fan who ended up buying a piece after chatting for a while.
Caught in the Act… of Being Completely Distracted by a Dog
Proof that Cory cannot resist a belly-up pupper, even in the middle of an art show. Somewhere behind him is a booth full of paintings… but in this moment? Nothing else mattered. This little moment of pure joy pretty much sums up how we roll—come for the art, stay for the dog lovin'.
What We Heard
The feedback we got made our day—
“It’s so happy in here!”
“This is the best acrylic pouring I’ve ever seen.”
“It’s so creative and pretty—very cool!”
“Your display is just beautiful.”
We soaked it all in. Even though sales were surprisingly low across the board (not just for us), the kind words reminded us why we do this.
What We Learned
We can do a multi-day show—and do it well.
Functional art like magnets and coasters gets attention.
Smaller pieces might be worth making more of in the future.
How It Felt to Share Our Work
While the sales didn’t meet our hopes (honestly, it was our lowest-selling show yet), hearing people respond to the creativity and uniqueness of our work was validating. It encouraged us to keep going, keep creating, and keep showing up.
When the Art Show Lands on May the 4th… You Take the Photo
What are the odds that our first two-day art show wrapped up on Star Wars Day? Pretty high, apparently—because this legend showed up fully dressed for the occasion. Naturally, Adrian had to get a picture. We don’t remember what galaxy he traveled from, but he definitely made our day here on Earth. May the Fourth be with us all.
Would We Do It Again?
We’d give it one more shot. The crowd was great, the location was promising, but the sales just didn’t add up this time. We’d love to see if next year’s event brings different results.
Want to See How It’s Made?
We’d love to invite you to check out our YouTube channel where you can watch some of the very same videos we played at the show. You’ll get a glimpse into how our artwork comes to life—swirls, spills, and all.
Thanks for following along on our creative journey. Stay tuned for whatever comes next!
